Hello Hobby Fam, we are back and I want to address a few topics bouncing around the hobby recently as well as share another edition of Should You Riiip?! So let’s get into it.
There has been some discussion about the Caleb Williams Topps Now card for being the first #1 pick QB to win his debut since 2002. People figured out that this was a photoshopped card from his days at USC. I collect Topps Now but this really bugs me. I understand that there are going to be photoshopped cards but it shouldn’t be for Topps Now. Topps Now is a card marking something that happened NOW, so these cards should be actual shots in their current uniform. It would be like making the Ohtani 50/50 Topps now in a picture photoshopped in an Angels uniform. With today’s technology, there should not be an issue pulling a shot from the actual event, even if there are licensing issues with the logos. Hopefully Topps is able to improve this process in the very near future.
Another Topps Now card in the news is the Shohei Ohtani 50/50 Topps Now, which had over 600,000 copies printed because people were chasing the 1/1 Autograph. But was it worth buying a few and taking the chance? Odds are, the base isn’t going to be worth what you paid and the chances of actually getting the auto seems close to winning the lottery. I don’t think this is good for the Topps Now brand as it should be geared more towards commemorating an event for all fans, especially fans of that player or team, rather than a result of making the base cards worthless. Are these Topps Now 1/1 Auto chases good for the hobby or are you ready for them to be over? Let me know what you think.
A new product I am excited about is 2024 Panini Photogenic WWE which comes out this week via Dutch auction and this set looks like it’s going to be an awesome product. It is an online only product. So this set should be limited and the photography is just amazing. The more sets Panini puts out for WWE, the more worried I am that they are losing the WWE license in early 2025. For as much criticism Panini receives in the Hobby, I have liked everything that they’ve done with WWE. Every product has almost near perfection. Topps has huge shoes to fill to get their products to be better than they used to be for WWE and to produce them to the level of Panini products.
Should You Riiip? We riiiped 15 packs of the New 2024 Score-A-Treat and Haunted Hoops from Panini. This was a fun opening to get ready for the Halloween season and I love some of the color matches. I mentioned how dope the Montez Sweat looked with the pumpkin parallel. With how cheap these are, these are definitely a great riiip! You can also hand them out during Halloween as a nice little treat and be the coolest house on the block!. If you were only to pick one, I would probably go with Score just because I love that the base are pumpkins and you can get numbered cards. You can check out the Riiip here……
