As a content creator I sometimes share some of the cards in my PC online. Some may be newly acquired but sometimes some were obtained many years ago. I enjoy sharing the stories of acquisition or what the cards mean to me. Usually behind every card there's a story behind it in some form or fashion. Obviously, some are better than others. As many know the 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson is my grail card and my prize possession. While it is valuable, my affection for that card has nothing to do with price tag.
Many listeners to my podcast sometimes attend shows I set up at as a dealer. They often peruse my cases to see some of the cards I've shared stories about online, unfortunately most of these searches are fruitless as I don't bring PC cards with me. I get asked why that's the case so I thought I'd use this space to explain why.
First off my pc cards are not for sale and yes I subscribe to the theory that everything has a price. I just don't want to be tempted to sell something I've acquired with no intention of moving. I know I can replace cards or even upgrade potentially. I just don't want that temptation. Another reason is I'm overly fearful of losing it or of a potential theft. Yes I have insurance but my mind still is my worst enemy and we all know while we need insurance no one likes to use it. I'd kick myself if something ever happened because I brought a PC card to my show setup.
Another reason is simply that showcase space can be limited and for every PC card in it, it's one less card I can make available to the general public and a potential customer. Someone suggested I should bring these PC cards to potentially upgrade them, sell/trade a lesser grade to obtain a higher graded specimen. Well it's a great suggestion and I have upgraded PC cards before, however I've never done it at a show in that fashion that I was set up at. I have acquired PC cards at a card show as a dealer by buying or trading for them but again never with a PC card to begin with. Full disclosure: I guess I'm a little bit stubborn in that capacity.
Question for fellow dealers…do you bring PC cards with you to your shows?
