They say, where there's smoke there’s fire, and that stands true across all segments of the hobby. No matter if you're looking at sports cards, TCG’s, or, in this case comic books, all you need to do is follow what’s trending in a particular segment and you will see where potential investment opportunities lie. However, you do need to strike while the iron is hot if you are looking to cash in while the fire is still burning. With that in mind, here are my picks for the Fire Five this March.
You would be hard pressed to find a hotter comic book on the market right now than Marvel’s 1982 Wolverine #1. Comic book collectors know exactly how important this book is to Logan’s lore, but for the novice, there are a few first to point out. Though a part of the X-Men for years prior to this release, this is Wolverine’s first solo title and leads to a fantastic story arc. The book also introduces the now famous Wolverine phrase, “I’m the best there is at what I do”, and offers the first cameo appearance of Yukio, a key figure in his story. All of that to say, even though this has been a key book for years, the upcoming release of Deadpool and Wolverine has this book hotter than ever. If you were looking to grab just one book this month, Wolverine #1 would be where I would start.
Right on the tail of Wolverine #1 is Marvel’s New Mutants #98 which was released in 1991. It’s hot for most of the same reasons as the book above, again with the upcoming release of Deadpool and Wolverine this May. New Mutants #98 does offer readers the first appearance of Deadpool, as well as Copycat and Gideon. Those last two are nice, but it’s Deadpool that matters here. We’ve all seen what that character has grown into and the effect he has had on pop culture. So, for comic book fans and movie lovers, this is where it all started for the Merc with a Mouth.
This one is going to be tough to find, with just over 4,000 copies ordered by retailers in 2001. However, if you can find a copy, Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog #98 is hot as the other books on this list. The reason being is it offers the first appearance of a Shadow the Hedgehog, who, if you’re not familiar with the franchise, is a darker version of the beloved Sonic. With the Sonic films seeing some success with a younger audience, the Knuckles series set to release, there are rumors Shadow may see his own spin-off as well.
Next to Santa Clause, Frosty, Rudolph, and Buddy the Elf, John McLane may be the best known Christmas movie character ever. We can have the is Die Hard a Christmas movie argument another time, however, what’s not up for debate is that John McLane is one of the greatest action movie characters of all time. So, when Boom! dropped the limited Die Hard: Year One series back in 2009 it made sense that readers of a certain age would love those books. Now there are rumors that another Die Hard film may be on the way featuring a young McLane, and it has sent collectors looking through back issues for their Die Hard: Year One series. While the original cover is great, I think Die Hard fans would agree that the cover below is the one to grab.
The final book on our Fire Five list is Pearl #1 from Jinxworld. This indie book was recently optioned by Amazon to be developed into a series. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Michael Gaydos, Amazon has brought them along as producers as well as adding Chriss Collins as the showrunner. This series about a tattoo artist, who also happens to be an assassin, seems like it was made for an Amazon show.
